The Kneelers
The History
Starting in early 1989, Dorna Daw led a team of talented embroiderers to create over 200 kneelers at Christ Church.
The earliest kneelers were completed in April 1989, and the most recent July 2005. Over 26 years of hard work, with a team including Ann Wallace, Barbara Green, Barbara Meardon, Barbara Phelps, Bill York, Brenda Clifford, Clare Carden, Delia Fricker, Diane Short, Doris Comley, Doris Hillier, Dorna Daw, Dorothy Lewis, Edna Watts. Eileen Ogden, Elizabeth Forbes, Eunice Stirrups, Evelyn Phesse, Flora Figgins, Gillian Wall, Helen Page, Ivy Jacques, Jean Pike, Jessie Rees, Lesley Chalmers, Margaret Clark, Margaret Hardman, Margaret Vale, Mary Baynton, Mary Roddis, Pam Wood, Peggy Carden, Sheila Deal, Teresa Squires, Vera Cole, Vera Groves, Wendy Darlison, Wendy King and Winfred Cross.
These kneelers mean so much to the congregation, the school children and the community, and they depict shapes and objects that can be found around Christ Church. Each one is unique and hand made - true works of art.
DCC! Recording
On the 5th and 12th February 2026, Dorna led a team once more to clean, scan, record and display these beautiful works of art in the church. Each kneeler was carefully cleaned, scanned and added to our records with all the details from the back, to ensure we have a record for years to come. When the labels were not visible on the back, Dorna used her logs to record the information instead.
What we did can be seen in this short video clip.
What a team effort!
